Skip hire or a clearance: which is cheaper in Swansea?
For rubbish that’s already piled up, a clearance is usually cheaper and quicker than a skip in Swansea. For a long renovation or lots of heavy rubble, a skip often wins. Here are the numbers.

What you usually can’t put in a skip
Most skip firms refuse these or charge extra for them:
- Sofas, armchairs and other upholstered seating, which must now be incinerated
- Mattresses
- Fridges, freezers and other electricals
- Plasterboard, unless it’s kept separate
- Tyres, paint, chemicals, gas bottles and asbestos
Skips also have weight limits. Fill one with rubble and you can be charged for the overweight.
When a skip makes more sense
- A renovation that produces waste over days or weeks
- Lots of heavy, loose rubble or soil
- You have a drive to put it on, and people to do the loading
When a clearance makes more sense
- The rubbish is already there and just needs to go
- It’s bulky and light: furniture, boxes, garden waste
- There’s no drive, and a skip on a Swansea terrace means a permit and a fight for parking
- It’s upstairs, in the loft or at the back of the house
- You’d rather not do the lifting
The costs people forget
With a skip on the road, there’s the permit, the risk of an overweight charge, and items sent back because they weren’t allowed. And a skip left outside overnight has a way of filling up with the neighbours’ rubbish. Someone else’s mattress in your skip is your problem.
