Why sofas cost more to get rid of
Natural Resources Wales requires old upholstered seating to be kept separate from other waste and destroyed by incineration, because the foam and fabric can contain persistent organic pollutants from old flame retardants. It can’t go to landfill or be recycled with everything else.
The rule covers sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, footstools, futons, bean bags, cushions and upholstered kitchen, dining and home office chairs. Mattresses aren’t covered, but tips charge for them one by one. That’s why many skip firms now refuse sofas or charge extra.
Cheaper options, honestly
Swansea Council collects up to three bulky items from the kerb for £24, or four to six for £48. If you can get it outside yourself and wait for a date, that’s the cheapest way. It won’t take items that are too heavy to lift safely, and you have to put everything out the night before.
If it’s still in good condition with its fire label attached, a furniture reuse charity may collect it for free.

Can you take a sofa from an upstairs flat?
Yes. Carrying down stairs is included in the £65 price.
Does a sofa bed count as a sofa?
Yes. Anything upholstered that you sit on falls under the same disposal rules.
Is it cheaper to use the council?
Yes, if you can put it at the kerb yourself and wait. Swansea Council charges £24 for one to three items.
Do you take divan bases?
Yes. A divan base on its own is a single item at £45.
